Where Stability Begins

He was known around town as someone who wandered, someone who walked everywhere. But he was so much more than that. Quiet by nature, he preferred to observe. Before his time in Annapolis, he had attended college. He was intelligent, thoughtful, and full of quiet wisdom. A bit of a mystery, he didn’t say much, but if you were patient enough to wait him out, you might be rewarded with a side smile or a dry, sarcastic remark. And it was always worth the wait.

We first met him during the depths of the Covid lockdown, when so many places were closed and resources were scarce, he showed up. Every single day. He never missed a day. He never asked for more than a cup of coffee. That routine continued day after day.

We received regular calls from concerned community members. He walked everywhere. He wandered. He never set up a “spot.” He never slept in a tent. He never bothered anyone. He never asked for shelter. He never wanted a housing voucher. What he wanted was a cup of coffee.

So that’s where we started. We knew it was a beginning. A small one, but a meaningful one. It was the start of a relationship built on trust. He came every day because he was welcomed. He came because he was seen. He came because he was treated with dignity. He came for the coffee.

This is what we do at The Light House. We meet people exactly where they are, without judgment and without conditions. Day after day, cup after cup, conversation after conversation, trust is built. And from that trust, hope begins.

Your support makes these small beginnings possible.
