May is Mental Health Awareness Month
May 2025
Safe and stable housing is critical for maintaining balanced mental health and well-being.
For individuals and families experiencing homelessness, coping with the trauma of this uncertainty can become unmanageable. Mental health challenges can develop due to overwhelming stress, while already existing mental health issues can be greatly exacerbated. This cycle of distress is difficult to break.
A recent study found that 82% of people who are homeless have experienced a symptom of mental illness.
At The Light House we recognize that having a place to call home is deeply intertwined with our emotional stability and we are committed to breaking these painful cycles of mental health challenges and homelessness. We offer a variety of programs that provide the building blocks of a healthy and meaningful life, including safe housing, food, and connections to medical and mental health care.
Thanks to a free training provided by Community Action Agency and Sarah’s House, our staff also recently became certified as “Mental Health First Aiders” through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. This training ensures that our staff are equipped with the skills needed to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges.
The Light House is a place where neighbors help neighbors, and we want to encourage all those who support us to have awareness and access to local mental health and crisis management resources.
